The class 10 exams are done and dusted with happy moods. All that remains is the little formality of the results. For the millions of students who have appeared in the exams 2012, the time is nerve-wracking and full of tension. After all, who doesn’t want to feature amongst the topper lists? Everyone from one’s parents, siblings, friends, extended family, not to mention the teachers and classmates are gunning for good results!
It’s not far-fetched to say that the results of these board exams will be the only topic of conversation for everyone one meets for the next several months at the least! All this peer and parental pressure are enough to warrant all one’s hopes and prayers for a respectable result. Keeping all the expectations from the student aside, it is quite interesting to see what the results of the class 10 exams actually mean to a student.
Anyone who has appeared for the board exams in the last few years will let you know that there is an unsolicited hoopla associated with these exams. While the students slog for an entire year, sometimes more, it seems that it is only the needling pressures of expectation from their parents and teachers that seems to be driving the students to excel. The joy of learning and the pursuit of knowledge seem to take a backseat in this supposed quest for excellence. The teachers and the parents on their part should realise that pushing the students hard simply in the pursuit of a higher aggregate percentage is not the right means to achieve a holistic education for the student.
The Central Board of Secondary Education has acted admirably over the last few years to ensure that the fear of the Board exams in the students’ minds is reduced to a minimum. One of the most successful endeavours on their part is to have made the class X exams optional for the students. While some students still choose to test themselves with an exam that is conducted at the national level, most students have been made free of the burden of the daunting Board exams!
What is it that these results really signify for a student? At best, the 10th results act as a tool for the schools to identify those students who are more suited to the Science stream, and those who are better equipped for the Commerce and Arts streams come the threshold of class 11. It is important for the students to realise that these exams are simply a test of their knowledge, and not a judgement on the future success or failure of their professional ambitions. Obviously, a good performance in the Board exams can boost the confidence level of a student. It is a credible indicator of the hard work, effort and dedication that a student has put in for the length of the past year.
While a favourable result will certainly bring unbound joys for the deserving students, a student should certainly take an unfavourable result in one’s stride, accepting it as just another test and nothing more! The results will be made available soon on the official website of Central Board of Secondary Education. So, get set to check your marks and plan for your higher class education.
