Do’s and Don’ts of CV Writing

A good CV reflects the character of a candidate. Therefore to represent ones skills and experience; has to prepare an effective and impressive CV. It is not a difficult task, but one can always take help of an expert to represent himself in a document. While preparing such an important document for your career, you should consider few do’s and don’ts. These points will help you to understand the view of recruiter while reading your CV. Here we have suggested a few do’s and don’ts. It is not the principles for CV writing, but helps to get an interview call.

Do’s of CV writing

  • Title: Mention your name and contact details at the top of your document so as to make your contact details visible as well as accessible for the recruiter. It is always advisable to mention contact details like phone no. Email ID available at the beginning of your CV.
  • Contact Detail: As mentioned in earlier point contact detail should be available at the top of the document. Always use formal e-mail address rather than some funky or funny e-mail, preferably your name or combination of first and last name.
  • Objective: Mention objective at the top of the document below contact details, so as to viewable at the first glance of CV. It should be precise and to the point.
  • Write concise summary after objective. Your profile summary plays a vital role in your CV if your summary is impressive and not too lengthy then recruiter will take time to read it.
  • Mention your skills in points and keywords, which will help the recruiter to understand your competency. This also helps to get your CV viewed online with the keywords.
  • Use formal font rather than some artistic font. The font should be readable and look professional. Basically arial or times new roman are globally accepted fonts. Keep the font size as 10 to 12 not too small or too large.
  • If you have experience then focus on your experience, responsibilities and achievements. Write short and simple sentences using proper punctuation marks, as well as use some impactful words which demonstrate your work / competency effectively.
  • If you don’t have prior experience then demonstrate your educational details, projects and other qualities, try to focus the document in line with your desire job profile and your knowledge.
  • Maintain same tense in the whole document.
  • Use positive words to start your each sentence, this shows your confidence and positivity.
  • Try to keep the length of CV to two pages.
  • Last but not the least proof read your document again and again or make someone else to proofread it for you to avoid grammatical errors or spelling mistakes.

Don’ts of CV writing

  • CV is a document getting your entry in any organisation hence it should give true and correct information about yourself; do not lie about your experience, competencies, skills or qualification.
  • Don’t give title for your document like Curriculum-vitae, Resume or Bio data. Name can be considered as a title for your CV.
  • Do not use ‘I’, ‘Me’, ‘My’ or ‘Myself’; the recruiter knows CV represents you hence there is no requirement of mentioning your ownership with above mentioned words.
  • Do not use artistic fonts which are not easy to read or view.
  • Do not give unnecessary boarders, or underlines; this may make your document and its content rambling.
  • Try to keep your document in black and white colour, do not use flashy fonts or colourful texture in the CV.
  • Do not mention reasons for leaving past jobs.Do not mention your current salary or expected salary in the CV.
  • Avoid technical jargons or abbreviations which are not understood by HR people.
  • Do not give reference details until it is asked for.
