Why retail jobs are great for your skill set

When you’re on the job hunt, particularly in these ‘uncertain times’ of recession and cutbacks, you’d be naïve to turn your nose up at any vacancy. Obviously some lines of work are more desirable than others, however – which is why it’s good to make a conscious effort to search in those industries where the more preferential work is up for grubs; one of those industries is retail.
The UK retail industry employs nearly 3 million people, and is forecast to steadily grow over the coming years, thus creating more retail jobs for the job seeker. Even now, there’s thousands of jobs in retail up for grabs – from sales assistant roles, to store manager positions, to head of merchandising.
Even if you don’t see retail as your dream line of work, there are some great positives to take from it. So, whether you see job in retail as your perfect pathway to an unrivalled working life, or if it’s to be the field that’ll act as a stop-gap cash cow, here’s a handful of skills that you can take from working in retail that can be applied to (almost) any line of work:

1) Learn what it takes to master the market: The retail industry is wholly determined by seasons and customer trends. What customers can buy is, pretty much, down to either what the weather’s doing, what public holiday’s around the corner, or what’s selling well. Now, while these variables might change from line of work to line of work, you can get an understanding as to customer needs and wants and how a business can best react.
2) You’ll become an awesome organiser: The tasks and duties thrown your way while working in retail can vary. One minute you’ll be stock checking, the next you’ll be deciding the floor layout, the next you’ll be dealing with a customer’s needs. With all these tasks, you’ll quickly get to grasp things’ importance. Plus, when it comes to stocking up and sorting out things for sales, say, you’ll become legendary in knowing what goes where.
3) Team means team: Retail jobs are all about team work. Day-to-day running can be very busy for a team at work, and so you’ll quickly become honed in the art of being a team player; from helping out colleagues who are swamped with customer service, to deligating duties to colleagues when you need to prep the store for the sale.
